I started collecting minerals at the age of three and first took on the lapidary arts by putting rocks into the washer and dryer. This had mixed results.

The first genuine field collecting experience I had was with the Chugach Gem and mineral society in Anchorage, Alaska. I was eleven at the time and it was the dead of winter. This field trip required us to wear snow shoes for trekking out to the collecting site that was a cliff wall of rocks next to a frozen river. Upon our arrival, club members eagerly gathered on the clear river ice to begin digging into the bank. It was cold as hell but, in that moment, I came to understand something far greater than any of my frozen body parts – the thrill of the hunt and the joy of discovery, at finding something beautiful in the ground.

 Or not…

Haiku Minerals

An exquisite first edition of Haiku Minerals pairs poetic mindful musings of Bay Area artist and mineral collector, Len Pisciotta, with museum quality specimens taken from his personal collection.

Each eloquent expression of natural beauty within the pages of Haiku Minerals is magnificently highlighted by the captivating photographic work of Martin Backhaus. The book also features a glowing endorsement by acclaimed Sausalito poet, Paul Geffner.

Like music, the combination of poetry, prose and art in this beautifully bound book is mindfully metered out, allowing for moments of pause and reflection; inspiration, delight and soulful connection.

Galaxy Garnets

The “Galaxy Garnets” available from Haiku Minerals are of limited quantity and originate from a recent and rare discovery of colorless garnets that have subsequently been treated with titanium, adding a polished and rainbow-like luminosity. Unique and eye-catching, Galaxy Garnets are quickly gaining appeal for jewelers and retail customers. While larger pieces (as much as 16 kg) exist, the bulk of the 1,200 pieces that have so far been discovered are about 2-3 millimeters in maximum dimension; so ideal for jewelry-making and wearing. Mineralogical Record’s 50th anniversary issue (November/December 2019) features an article by Len Pisciotta that goes into greater detail about this particularly special find titled, “White Grossular; From near the Stifle Claim; Georgetown, El Dorado County, California.”
